Vigilante

Vigilante Class Codex Trimmed

The Vigilante is an ordinary citizen that has grown tired of the constant suffering and injustice of the world around them. Too often are the weak and the poor tread upon by the strong and affluent, all while law and order turn a blind eye. For the Vigilante, this causes great internal outrage and eventually they see themselves as having no choice but to take matters into their own hands. Soon they are raising arms to defend those that cannot defend themselves or seeking justice when supposedly honorable men and women fail to uphold their own principles.

Fury burns within the Vigilante, who feel honor bound to become the hand of justice. But it is a justice of their own design, forged in the chaos of the streets and filth of the gutters, where every wrong must be repaid in kind. This inevitably puts them at odds with the established laws of the land, but by the time this occurs the Vigilante is likely to already see themselves as above the law.

Some will call them brigand; some will call them hero. Among the common folk, as word of their deeds reaches far and wide, they may even become a champion of the people. This is a dangerous thing for those wishing to establish law and order, or for those that would oppress the weak, for a champion of the people has the protection of those people and can appear untouchable by lawmakers and enforcers. Guided by their own moral compass and sense of honor, a Vigilante is prone to falling prey to their own personal vices, for they typically walk a lonely path through life. For those truly above reproach, it may instead be a well paid assassin’s blade that is their undoing. But regardless of the truth of their life or death, the lasting legacy of any noteworthy Vigilante is for your name to be celebrated among the people and your legend taught to children for generations to come.

Primary Skills

Fury

Vigilantes follow the standard methods of gaining fury in combat by both inflicting and taking damage.

Gain +1 Fury for every killing blow Dealing Normal Damage Dealing Crit Damage Taking Normal Damage Taking Crit Damage
Physical Attack w/ 1 Handed Weapon +1 Fury +2 Fury +1 Fury +2 Fury
Physical Attack w/ 2 Handed Weapon +2 Fury +4 Fury +2 Fury +4 Fury

Learning new Fury Skills is a function of training. The simplest way to learn a new Fury skill is to pay a Combat Trainer to teach the skill that is of interest. However, Vigilantes can also pick up new skills from an experienced fellow Vigilante, Warrior, Barbarian, Pit-fighter or other Fury Class. Once a skill is learned, it can be improved simply though repeated use.

New fury skills require training unless they are upgrades (i.e. Berserker Strike -> Improved Berserker Strike), see Learning New Fury Skills for details.

Honor

Codes

A vigilante has a strong sense of justice, though this is often their own interpretation of what justice should be, colored by a hard life on the streets or some other traumatic experience. Seeking justice, under the guise of vengeance, is a matter of deep personal honor. All vigilantes adhere first and foremost to the Code of Street Justice, though as they carve a violent path through life they will adopt new codes of honor along the way.

Skills

A Vigilante utilizes Honor skills, in the form of Oaths, Virtues, and Code skills, to defend those who cannot defend themselves and seek violent retribution against those who have done wrong.

No training is required for Oaths and Virtues, as these are a function of the Vigilante’s personal and imposed sense of honor. This does not mean that vigilantes take oaths lightly, nor do they profess virtue without the bloody proof to back it up. Training in Code Skills is required and is typically facilitated by other like minded individuals, with veteran vigilantes acting as Mentor and trainer to younger, less experienced vigilantes.

Vigilantes cannot learn a previously unknown Code or Code Skill (i.e. putting the first code point into Revenge) unless they are taught/instructed by a Mentor (aka Code Trainer) that knows the corresponding skill. If assigning additional code points to an already known code skill, then no trainer is required and the point can be assigned immediately (i.e. increasing the number of code points in Revenge from 1 to 2). This represents an Vigilante honing their skills rather than actually learning a new skill.

See Learning New Honor Codes and Skills for details.

Level Ups

Vigilantes use the following chart for levelling up:

HP Dice (Regular): Small Race (1d8), Medium Race (1d10), Large Race (1d12)

Notes:

  1. New Honor Codes and new Code Abilities require training unless they are upgrades (i.e. increasing the number of code points in Honor Strike from 1 to 2), see Learning New Honor Codes and Code Abilities for details
  2. Re-calculate Fury Max each level
  3. New fury abilities require training unless they are upgrades (i.e. Berserker Strike -> Improved Berserker Strike), see Learning New Fury Abilities for details

Specializations

Specializations are recommended for advanced players only, and are accomplished through the Secondary Skill system (see Specialist Skills). Vigilantes may choose to specialize their skills in up to one weapon use and/or one combat style.

  • Max one Weapon Specialist skill (choose from: Knives, Swords, Bludgeons, Axes, Polearms)
  • Max one Combat Specialist skill (choose from: Sword and Board, Freehand, Great Weapon, Paired Weapon, Freestyle, Warder, Mounted)

Title System

Vigilantes gain titles based on their deeds and reputation both on and off the battlefield. Ultimately Vigilantes see themselves as heroes of the people and champions of the down trodden. Therefore their Renown is directly related to the stories that people tell about them, and the laws that they side step or even flat out break in the pursuit of ‘true’ justice.

The titles awarded by a Vigilante’s Renown are as follows:

Notable Characters

Roginn Hathelheftin

Centaur Vigilante, Hero of the War of the Twin Terrors, slain in battle against the Shade of Deathlord Archibald during the final moments of the the Battle of Necrodark. Resurrected by the Paladin Grandmaster of the Order of the Red Hawk, became the only surviving member of the Heroes of the East.

[Following the victory at the Battle of Necrodark] there was much ceremony and celebration in the capital, for many had thought themselves doomed. All of the heroes of the war were honored, even down to the lowest foot soldier. As the only living member of the band of heroes that had given their lives to defeat Deathlord Archibald and ensure that the angel known as Agamedien could carry the evil Sceptre of Necordark into oblivion, Roginn received the honors due to all his companions.

However, the once gregarious vigilante and heroic champion of the people, seemed a shadow of his former self. Other than to play his part in the ceremonies and festivities he was seldom found outside of the Smiling Mule tavern, drinking even more heavily than usually. Some said that the he bore the deaths of his comrades upon his shoulders, others claimed that it was the guilt for being the only one to survive, but regardless of the reasons, darkness followed him like a brooding storm cloud. After laying hands upon several well wishers and nearly beating a man to death at the ceremony for his cousin, the Paladin Kal Emdar, most people quickly learned to leave the drunken self-loathing centaur well enough alone.
