Soldier

Soldier Class Codex Trimmed

Soldiers are masters of various forms of physical combat. As one of the most proficient weapon users in the Realm of Strife, they are as comfortable crossing swords in close combat as they are firing arrows from a distance. In fact, they are often found doing both in the same battle. Soldiers are calculated and typically well trained with their own personal arsenal of weapons and armor. Though widely proficient in many weapon types, most Soldiers will choose to specialize in a particular favorite type of weapon, giving them a unique style on the battlefield. When the chaos of combat descends they rely on their training to know when to hold back and went to strike. A Soldier tends to approach combat with a degree of caution—not due to cowardice, but rather the wisdom gained from surviving countless battles.

A wise Soldier knows their limits, acknowledging that combat can drag on dangerously long. Expending too much vigor too quickly can lead to exhaustion, opening one up to small yet deadly mistakes in a battle. Unlike their Barbarian counterparts, Soldiers tend to be more effective at the outset of combat, but diminish with each passing round. As such, they seek to end combat as quickly and decisively as possible, but will pace themselves when a quick victory is not an option.

Soldiers can be found in almost any culture, though their exact training or fighting styles differ greatly. Because they tend to favor training and discipline, coupled with a mastery of battle stances, Soldiers are often employed by armies or mercenary bands throughout the Realm of Strife. This is not a requirement, however—a Soldier could simply be a well-trained fighter and adventurer.

Primary Skills

Vigor

A Soldiers training includes battlefield experience and long hours spent drilling, learning to master a wide array of weapons, tactics, and battle stances. However, as with any Vigor class, prolonged combat can tire a Soldier out, and they must use their skills wisely.

Learning new Vigor Skills is relatively simple, and follows the standard methods of training. Typically Soldiers volunteer or find employment within a standing army, city or town guard, local militia, or mercenary force. In these cases training is typically facilitated through their associated force. However, they could just as easily pick up new skills from an experienced warrior, soldier, marksman, or other vigor class. At times they may even just pay a Combat Trainer to learn a new skill. Once a skill is learned though, it can be improved simply though repeated use.

New vigor skills require training unless they are upgrades (i.e. Offensive Stance -> Improved Offensive Stance), see Learning New Vigor Skills for details.

Level Ups

Soldiers use the following chart for leveling up:

HP Dice (Hearty): Small Race (1d10), Medium Race (1d12), Large Race (1d12)

Notes:

  1. Re-calculate Vigor Max each level
  2. New vigor abilities require training unless they are upgrades (i.e. Offensive Stance -> Improved Offensive Stance), see Learning New Vigor Abilities for details

Specializations

Specializations are recommended for advanced players only, and are accomplished through the Secondary Skill system (see Specialist Skills). Soldiers may choose to specialize their skills in up to two weapon uses and/or one combat style, but can not have more than two specializations in total.

  • Max two Weapon Specialist skills (choose from: Knives, Swords, Bludgeons, Axes, Hand Weapons, Polearms, Staves, Whips, Bows, Crossbows)
  • Max one Combat Specialist skill (choose from: Sword & Board, Freehand, Great Weapon, Paired Weapon, Freestyle, Sharpshooter, Skirmisher, Peltast, Warder, Mounted)

Title Ups

Renown Titles

Soldiers gain titles based on their deeds and reputation both on and off the battlefield. This system of gaining titles is referred to as Renown. While Soldiers may be a part of a formal military organization, a mercenary band, or even a fighters guild, these groups do not have any bearing on the Soldier’s renown title system, even if the group they belong to has its own inherent title system. A common example of this would be for a Soldier that has been recruited into the ranks of an local or national army. While their title as part of a military organization could be Sergeant, Captain, etc… and even have some benefits associated with that title, this is completely separate from their renown title and the system of rewards and benefits in confers.

The titles awarded by a Soldier’s Renown are as follows:

Army Ranks

The ranks (titles) awarded by a standing army, military organization, or mercenary band are above and beyond the renown titles, but can be used as follows:

Notable Characters

Taylor Lewis, Champion of the Republic
Special Infantry Captain of the Republican Army and Hero of the War of the Twin Terrors,  instrumental in the defeat of the Demon Prince Cerebus the Blood Thirster

“Ebonethia, I may never get another chance to say this,” he whispered, “I love you.”

As Taylor tore himself from her embrace it was if Ebonethia’s heart was being ripped from her
chest. How she had longed to hear these words from Taylor, but not like this. With her delicate Elven
hands desperately trying to claw him back, Taylor turned and leapt from the platform. Ebonethia would
have followed after him, to whatever end, had it not been for Seleena and Blood-brood arriving just in
time to restrain her. She could only watch in anguish as Taylor plunged towards Cerebus, the
Drenn’Salar raised in both hands high over his head and a battle cry bellowing forth from his mouth. The
force of the impact drove the needle like handle of the Drenn’Salar deep into Cerebus’ flesh, piercing his
thick hide with ease. However the jolt caused his grip to slip and it was all that Taylor could do to keep
one hand on the Drenn’Salar, clinging to it for dear life. He now dangled helpless but triumphant, a fatal
fall from Cerebus’ back awaiting him should his hold on the weapon fail. And now at last Cerebus took
notice.

“Foolish mortals,” the Demon Prince mocked them, “the mighty Cerebus cannot be defeated by
a mere pin prick!”
