Dragonscale Crafting is a highly specialized technique that mimics that of Scalemail, but using the harvested scales of dragons instead of metallic scales. Dragon scales can generally only be acquired by killing dragons and salvaging any undamaged scales, as such the higher the quality of the scale the rarer and therefore more expensive it becomes. In addition to providing more armor value than traditional Scalemail, Dragonscale armor also provides resistance to damage based in the same type as the dragon flight the scales belong to (i.e. Red Dragonscale armor would provide Fire/Heat Resistance). The following rules apply to Dragonscale armor:
- Dragonscale armor is a generic term which can refer to Wyrmscale, Drakescale, Dragon Scale, or Elder Dragonscale Armor
- The scales found on whelps are not suitable for crafting Dragonscale armor
- All Dragonscale armor is treated as Scalemail armor for the purposes of Attributes and Layering, and therefore is considered Noisy and CAN NOT be layered
- The “Crafted Price” is the normal market price and includes all materials, however finding someone capable of crafting these types of armor is rare (increasingly so as the quality increases), as is the chances that they just happen to have a stock supply of Dragonscales
- If using the Blacksmith/Armorsmith Secondary skill the normal material cost discount (25% of the market price) applies only to the Base Price NOT the price of the Scales themselves however failing to make the armor piece does NOT result in losing all scales, instead only 10% of the scales used are lost
- All types of Dragonscale Crafting require a minimum Lvl3 Armorsmith
- The secrets of Dragonscale Crafting are very closely guarded and as such recipes/schematics do not generally exist, even on the black market, therefor in order to learn the technique you must train under an Armorsmith that already knows the technique (average costs and length of training are shown for each type of Dragonscale Crafting)
Wyrmscale
Wyrmscale can be found on any type of Wyrm, salvaged at a rate of 1d6+3 scales per Wyrm (all other scales are assumed to have been damaged in combat and/or in the removal process)
Training in Wyrmscale crafting costs 150g and takes 8 weeks of training
Drakescale
Drakescale can be found on any type of Drake, salvaged at a rate of 1d8+4 scales per Drake (all other scales are assumed to have been damaged in combat and/or in the removal process)
Training in Drakescale crafting costs 500g and takes 16 weeks of training
Dragonscale
Dragonscale can be found on any type of Dragon, salvaged at a rate of 1d12+6 scales per Dragon (all other scales are assumed to have been damaged in combat and/or in the removal process)
Training in Drakescale crafting costs 1500g and takes 32 weeks of training
Elder Dragonscale
Elder Dragonscales can only be found on Regal Dragons, salvaged at a rate of 1d12+6 scales per Regal Dragon (all other scales are assumed to have been damaged in combat and/or in the removal process)
Training in Elder Dragonscale crafting costs 3000g and takes 64 weeks of training, assuming there is even a Smith alive that knows how to Craft Elder Dragonscale armor…
